Welcome to The Dynamics of Rotating Fluids
jump to navigationThe dynamics of fluids in the presence of background rotation and/or stratification underlies a great many phenomena in geophysics, engineering, astrophysics and a number of other disciplines. This site is intended to present some basic concepts concerning fluids in rotation, illustrating them with images and movies produced from various sources. Many of these movies were originally produced in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of Raymond Hide, which was located at the UK Met. Office between 1967 and 1988.
You can take a look at our list of master tapes that outlines the current extent of the collection. However, we also present selections of this material in the form of thematic topics or "lessons", which can be found using the links on the left hand side of this page. This is a collection that is still under construction - watch this space!
