  Oriel poised for record run

  Although their outings have been limited this year Oriel look good enough to make it a record 14 successive Headships of the Oxford University Torpids, which start on the Isis today (12.0) and continue until Saturday (a Special Correspondent writes).

  There could be changes lower down the division where Exeter, the fourth placed crew, are useful off the start and could threaten Keble and Christ Church.

  In the women's division one, Hugh's in fifth place are favourites to take over from Osler House at the top. They supplied both crews in the final of the fours in November and should emulate Oriel in being the top crew in the summer eights and Torpids.

  Head crews favoured

  The Cambridge Lent Races and Oxford Torpids start today with neither Head crew looking in much danger of losing their titles [discussion of Lents]

  At Oxford, Oriel have been Head for a record run of 13 years.

  Stroked this year by Mark Carnegie, son of Oxford's 1957 Australian president, now Sir Rod Carnegie, they look sufficiently businesslike to stay at the top for the next four nights. [Start Order]

  Little threat to Oriel from Christ Church

  Oriel comfortably rowed over at the top of the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis yesterday. They were never challenged by Christ Church, who were later bumped by Keble.

  Lower down the division, St Edmund Hall lost three places. They were late in acknowledging a bump by Oriel II and were overtaken by Brasenose and Queen's.

  St Catherine's took Osler House at the top of the Women's Divsion One. The bump was not acknowledged by Osler and was awarded on an umpire's observation.

  In the Men's Division Six, Keble IV went down ten places and were relegated to the top of Division Seven. They went into the bank after being bumped by St Benet's and were passed by the nine crews following. [List of Bumps]

  St Catherine's move to the head of the women's divisions on the first day of the Oxford Torpids, thereby deposing Osler House, who had failed to acknowledge being bumped.

  Oriel retain the lead with two-length victory

  There were no changes at the top of the two premier divisions of the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis yesterday.

  Oriel were two lengths clear of Keble in the men's first division as the crews passed the university boathouse and St Catherine's were well clear of Osler House in the women's top division. [List of Bumps]

  Keble, only two lengths astern, threatened Oriel, who rowed over at the head of the second day of the Oxford University Torpids. Christ Church, in third place, were lucky to escape a second night bump at Exeter's hands.

  Oriel 2 rapidly caught Christ Church on the last day of Oxford University Torpids. The bump took them up to fourth place in the first division and stole most of the limelight from the college first crew who, unscathed by Keble, once more rowed over in Head position.

  Boat Race crews take back seat

  The training of the Boat Race crews, in the vital consolidating phase before arriving on the Tideway on March 25 for their final spell, was less spectacular last week than the considerable rowing activity elsewhere.

  Last Saturday saw the final stages of both the Lent Races at Cambridge and the Oxford Torpids. [Lents discussion]

  At Oxford, the main honours went to Oriel. Not only did they stretch their run as Head of the River to a record 14th consecutive year, but their second boat made a remarkable four bumps to finish fourth, which must surely be a record for a second boat.

  New Leaders

  Other crews at Oxford to impress were Lincoln and St Catherine's, both of whom won their oars with four bumps apiece, and New College, who failed by feet on the last day to win their oars.

  Oriel hold on to headship of Torpids

  Oriel retained the headship of the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis for the fourteenth consecutive year. Their domination was highlighted when their second eight moved up to fourth place in the first division after bumping Christ Church.

  On the first night Keble bumped Christ Church, but were never able seriously to challenge Oriel, who thus retained the headship for the fourteenth successive year. Following St Hugh's in Eights, Oriel's second torpid finished fourth after four bumps. Pembroke had hoped to finish second, but Keble were well clear of them on the last night. Lincoln and St Catherine's both deserved their rise of four places.

  The rule, in Torpids, insisting that a bumped boat carries on rowing caused the usual dramatic falls in the lower divisions and, more seriously, cost St Edmund Hall three places on the first night.

  In the women's divisions on the first night, St Catherine's ended the brief reign of Osler House at head, only to be bumped into second place on the last night by a powerful St Hugh's. University College's women cancelled their men's fall of four by an equal rise.

  The standard of rowing in both men's and women's divisions was noticeably lower than in recent years.
