Introduction

The Oxford
University Club provides social and sports facilities for staff and postgraduate students who do not have access to college facilities.

The running group usually meets Tuesday lunchtime and Thursday evening each week throughout the year, starting from the changing rooms at the back of the University Club in Mansfield Road (map, actually just to the right of the "L" in "MANSFIELD RD" - the arrow on the map can be a bit random). Showers and lockers are available, although the lockers require a pound coin as deposit for the key.

The number of participants varies between 2 and 20 (see statistics) and runs typically last 30-40 minutes, with alternative routes to suit all abilities, typically spanning 6-10 minute mile pace. After the Thursday evening run we settle into the bar of the University Club to set the world to rights.

The club does not seek to poach members from proper local running clubs and it is not affiliated to any athletics organisation. The more enthusiastic members enter events such as those listed below, but there are others who only ever turn for the pub sessions. However, be warned that some of the latter category have unexpectedly found themselves pitched into the former category (some, but not all while under the influence of alcohol).

New runners are welcome to join us at any time, although those less confident in their running abilities may prefer to wait for the special "newcomers" sessions (usually the first Tuesday and Thursday of every month) where we attempt to provide escorts and 30 minute-routes whatever your speed.

Further details can be obtained from Anu Dudhia (dudhia@atm.ox.ac.uk) or by subscribing yourself to the e-mail list

OK what's got 17 legs, more twist and turns than a twisty-turny thing, and remains throughout like American beer (you know...)? Its the OUCH T'riffic Thames Trot 2009!!

www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-kingdom/london/487977257921

Yes, after a clear mandate from El Presidente at the Non-Christmas Dinner, your dedicated disorganiser has started concocting a plan. In summary, my suggestion is to start on a Saturday lunchtime from Teddington, and get as far as Temple Footbridge (Marker H - one past Cookham) on Saturday. This is 40.5 miles, and we should comfortably be holed up in a nice Cookham pub with pie and chips by about 7pm. On Sunday the remaining distance is 55.8 miles, which with a 10am start should see us celebrating our triumph in the Head of the River at a similar hour. Single legs of the relay vary between 0.5 and 8.2 miles - the former is the final leg, designed for a 'mass finish'. Most are straightforward to navigate, and very scenic! The idea is that people get to choose which legs they do, and the more participants we have, the more choice there will be. Any number of runners can do each leg, but the intention at least is that if runners of different speeds are on the same leg they stick together to minimise the chance of major f**k-ups. Changeover points are all car accessible - I reckon we'll need two at least - mostly with nearby parking, and the occasional conveniently placed watering hole.

Maps of some local runs

Runs starting and finishing at the University Club in Mansfield Rd. "all road" routes are suitable for night-time runs and, usually, all weather conditions although note that the cycle track out to Marston Rd is prone to flooding [

OUCH finished 3rd/15 Men's Team Event. Unfortunately we had only 3 women entered as part of the OUCH team, and the team competition was based on the fastest 4. If we'd had another woman team member entered, they would only have had to run under 1h3m and OUCH would also have finished 3rd in the Women's Team Event.

Bournemouth Quarter Marathon

We thought the race was 10k (given the advert we saw was for the Easter 10k), but it turned out to be a quarter marathon (6.55 miles). The course was more or less the second half of the Bournemouth half marathon, but in the rain and an Easterly wind. More expensive than the half marathon, but pleasantly shorter - VJ.

Dorney Dash 10k

www.datchet-dashers.com/dash/

It's basically 2 up-and-back laps of the new Dorney rowing lake. So you get the benefits of it being perfectly flat, wide paths and no cars. It's a good opportunity to do a fast time if you're feeling fit. It's a bit odd to run 2km in a dead straight line though. And the black tarmac reflects the heat nicely on a blistering hot day. It's well organised and you can use the rowing clubhouse for changing, showers and refreshments - PD 2006.

Dorney Lake 10k (Cancer Research)

2006: More of a charity "event" than a race - they didn't even do any official timing. Me - 44.37, Julie - 50.44. It was quite a big event, ~1500, and crowded so you need to be near the front if you're after a fast time. Dead flat - obviously! - PD
2007: Those are good times for us but we think that is due to the course being distinctly short (6.05 miles on our GPSs) rather than to athleticism on our part!- PD

Goring 10k

The course is "ok". The first few k is an upward climb out of the river valley, then it's a few k on flat (and very exposed on a cold day!) countryside before a few k back down again. It's a handy, local event and the roads are well organised but changing is cramped, there's nowhere decent to leave a bag, the showers were switched off, very long queues for the loos and nowhere to get a hot drink which everyone was desperate for on a freezing day - PD 2008.

Otmoor Challenge

http://www.otmoor.co.uk

An informal event held in conjunction with the Horton-cum-Studley village fete. Approximately half-marathon distance around Otmoor with about half the distance on roads and the rest on tracks.
It was sunny and hot with not much escape to the shade. The rough ground was hard and uneven - good ankle strengthening in the longest field in the world (miles 8 and 9) followed by the longest hill in the world at mile 10. Nice route, but the longest "half-marathon" in the world, with good cakes and tea and a very jolly fete afterwards. - V&J 2006

Santa Barbara Nite Moves 5k

www.runsantabarbara.com/nite_moves.html A weekly event.

Silverstone 10k

Two laps of the Grand Prix circuit.
Part of the
East Midlands Grand Prix series of summer evening runs.
The circuit has more gradients than you might imagine, and the straights can seem very long. It's an evening race in May (usu. 7.30pm kick-off), so conditions often good - no midday heat nor night-time cool. Track seemed less strewn with debris this year, with over 1,000 registered starters. Changing takes place in the pits, and the race finishes in the pitlane - unfortunately the start is not generated by the overhead lights, but a traditional starting-pistol. Well organised by Silson Joggers AC. Probably a 60-mile round trip from Oxford, but at least you can say "I raced at Silverstone"... - CL 2003

Watlington 10k

This was a race of mainly vertical ascents and descents, and strictly for masochists. I had to walk/crawl up the verticals (Watlington Hill and Shirburn Hill), and slide down the descents (ditto), posting a time of unbearable slowness. I hope to be persuaded not to do it ever again, as I still have lactic acid in the legs two days later - CL 2009

History

The running group can trace its origins back to
1974 when a group from the Atmospheric Physics Department met weekly at Iffley Road cinder running track (where Roger Bannister ran the first 4-minute mile) for some general fitness training. Afterwards we used to have a drink in the local pub The Fir Tree (re-named to The Old Ale House in 1999). Over the years weight and circuit training became less popular with the participants and, since the boom in the early 1980s, running has become the sole activity (other than the post-training fluid replacement therapy sessions).

The origins of the running group are difficult to define precisely. However, the following records have been extracted from an old diary.

Damn, I'll never be able to claim I was quicker than 1.49 ...

Looks good. Mind you, if i'd ever read that before I came running the
first time I would have been scared off ... it all sounds so serious. I'd
put more about the pub sessions right in the first sentence. And mention
the Angel in the first paragraph ... but then that shows my priorities.
